Bat Care

Bats are very sensitive to atmospheric conditions. We advise you not to play with your bat in wet conditions. If it is unavoidable, it really is a good idea to keep it off the ground so as not to draw any moisture up through the toe. When this happens the toe can become weakened leaving your bat susceptible to damage from a Yorker.

Superficial cracks to the edges and toe are to be expected and can be treated at home by rubbing down with fine sandpaper and re-applying a light coat of oil to the area.

After a season’s use, it’s all too easy to put the cricket bag in the loft or the garage and forget it for a few months but please be aware of the potential problems associated with this practice:

  • If Bats are exposed to cold – damp conditions, the moisture in the atmosphere will be soaked up by the blade leaving you with a sponge effect. The bat will become heavier, weakened and more prone to breaking.

  • Conversely, if a bat is kept in very dry warm conditions, there is a chance it may dry out leaving it weak and brittle.

The answer is to store it in the house away from radiators or fires; under the stairs is perfect. Put it in a plastic bag, this will keep the surrounding atmosphere constant for the winter period. A bin liner is ideal, it doesn’t look great but it does the job. A smallish coat of oil just before you put it away will keep the wood fibres moist enough and ensure the bat is ready to do the business again come the spring.

A service is a good idea. To prolong the life of your bat, a good clean up is recommended. Sanding the face, back and edges, then re-applying oil will not only leave the bat looking good but will also stop it drying out.
